PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS ON THE JOB MARKET – DANGER OR OPPORTUNITY?

October 20, 2016

According to the administrative data from Estonian National social insurance board, there were 32 498 people in working age in Estonia in the beginning of the year 2014, to whom within the incapacity expertise conducted by the Estonian National social insurance board, loss of work ability was established between 10-100 % and who had a mark on their expertise documents about mental or behavioral disorders. Among them 24 475 people had the main diagnosis of mental- and behavioral disorder. People with mental health disorders are a risk group on the job market. They can be described by low employment, higher inactivity and unemployment; the occupied ones by underemployment in sense of the level of education as well as normal workload.

Lower willingness and worse opportunities to participate in the job market can be explained by lower work ability and lower employment capacity. Participating in the job market may also be affected by the availability of treatment, acquired education, work experience and availability of work suitable for one’s health status. Participating in working and functioning in society can more often be distracted by the misconceptions and false beliefs related to the disorder rather than by the disorder itself.

The animations were made within the “Positive Attitude Development” Project to decrease the prejudice and shame in society related to mental health disorders, to promote social involvement and the employment of young people with mental health problems.
